The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in Niger State has called on the government to design and build roads according to applicable standards.
This advice is coming days after the government kicked off reconstruction of the Minna-Kateregi-Bida road.
In a communiqué issued after its fourth Engr. A.A Lapai Distinguished Annual Lecture, the engineers said adhering to applicable standards in road construction will preserve the road’s life span and prevent deterioration.
The professionals recommended the enforcement of maximum axle load on all highways across the country, and the introduction of weighing machines at major strategic loading points to enforce maximum load capacity.
They also called for regular monitoring of physical condition and deteriorations of roads to so the government can act fast when a road begins to deteriorate.
The engineers also urged the state to make funds available before contracts are awarded to prevent delays in work.
